Data shows that more and more online customers are proving both savvy and cautious when it comes to buying new items. A very high percentage rely on online reviews. Obviously, there is no better trumpet blast than an honest and positive review. So, online entrepreneurs have no reason to be anything but jubilant about them. Right? Well, for the most part, yes. Most reviewers wish to convey their honest opinion, which if positive will only prove to bolster a product and brand. Even an occasional negative review isn’t necessarily bad, as it’s been shown that readers will take the entire context of reviews into consideration. And more readers are likely to assume that the majority of reviews are reliable if at least a percentage is negative. That said, there are instances of blatant fakes that are negative, because an unhappy employee, customer or competitor elects the low road. Fight this unfair practice with patience and logic. Do not sell at sites that allow product reviews from unauthorized or acknowledged buyers. Respond on behalf of your product, with courtesy, to every single negative review. Even if the poster remains unmoved, other readers will care. Apologize where warranted and politely point out fallacies where noted. If possible, arm yourself with data about the negative posters. Offer your own positive data for perusal. A great choice is to utilize CSAT surveys from “Delighted.”

Key Takeaways:

  • Don’t treat online reviews as data, but conduct customer satisfaction surveys for business insights.
  • Don’t sell products on sites that allow people to write reviews without making purchases.
  • Respond to all negative reviews, and point out inconsistencies and errors in them.

“If you’re dealing with an influx of unfounded negative reviews, or even just a few here and there, here’s how to make sure fake reviews don’t ruin your business.”

By focusing on three core things including work independence, cooperation from management regarding a work-life balance, and growth opportunities, employee motivation in the workplace can be increased. Employee happiness and work productivity go hand in hand. Office events or even small gestures can aid in making employees feel more connected and wanted. Additionally, avoiding micromanagement and allowing for an independent work environment is another great way to increase motivation. Also, a company can show appreciation for their workers through awards and recognition, which helps create a special bond with the employee. By allowing employees to work independently, giving them enough growth opportunities, and showing recognition, employees will be more motivated to increase their productivity.

Key Takeaways:

  • Employees value work independence, so let them have their own style of work and don’t supervise every little step
  • Workers want their employers to help them maintain work-life balance and to accommodate their life schedules.
  • Most employees don’t want to stay in the same position for too long, so provide them with new roles and challenges.

“A company can do a lot of small things to keep them in a positive spirit like congratulating them on their birthday, giving bonuses, acknowledging their hard work.”

I recall when Tom Hermann and I talked about how we would create one control that was going to take over the industry. Herman is the “H” in HBX Controls, a company formed in 2002. When I was starting out, we would talk all the time about hydronics and controls. Some time later, I gave a presentation where John Siegenthaler was in the audience. We have since chatted about controls and other topics. I learned about the physiological effects of radiant heating from Robert Bean. John and Robert share a love of the HVAC industry and have a great approach to teaching.

Key Takeaways:

  • I am proud to be part owner of HBX Controls, which has been around for nearly 20 years.
  • Tom Hermann was my biggest influence; all we would talk about was controls and hydrolics.
  • John Siegenthaler, Robert Bean and I all share a love for the HVAC industry.

“Tom and I stared down at it while on the plane, and we talked about how this one control was going to take over the industry—one control to rule them all.”

One type of heat pump gaining popularity in Canada is the air-to-water heat pump. These heat pumps extract heat from the outside air, so they are influenced by the temperature outside. The “cut-out” temperature is the degree at which the pump shuts off. This concerns people. However, most of Canada is only rarely colder than the cut-out temperature. As new building and energy codes and new taxes emerge, air-to-water heat pumps are becoming more viable. Auxiliary heat sources can be used alongside the pumps. The question for the future isn’t “what is the cut-out temperature?” but “How can we make best use of the heat pump while it can operate?”

Key Takeaways:

  • When the design temperature is below the heat pump cut out temperature, an auxiliary heat source is needed.
  • The Federal carbon tax will push the industry towards electric heating solutions and air-to-water heat pumps.
  • Instead of asking about cut-out temperature, ask about the best way to use the heat pump when it can operate.

“Air-to-water heat pumps extract heat from the air outside a building, so the machine’s ability to perform efficiently and provide useful heating is greatly influenced by outside air temperature.”

For small business processing payments made through the charge cards used by customers poses several questions that management needs to consider. There are fees charged by issuing financial institutions for each transaction, and processing itself is a strictly defined process. These questions are unavoidable since more and more customers opt for plastic when making purchases. Therefore, it is critical for business to be able to accommodate this form of convenient payment. For small companies, this also means they always need to be on the lookout for the most cost effective option.

Key Takeaways:

  • More types of businesses, from more industries, are finding it necessary to add credit cards to their payment models, because more purchases are being made that way.
  • Credit card processing isn’t as straight-forward as other means of payment, because it involves the working together of various distinct entities.
  • As a business owner, you can create a merchant account to deal with credit card transactions. Or, you can go the route of a credit card processor.

“Credit cards inspire customers to buy impulsively. So, accepting credit cards means more impulse purchases in your store.”

Modern heating panels are slim and space-saving and work well in new construction as well as replacements. They are 2′-4’ generally and can be controlled as independent zones by using a non-electric thermostatic valve, and a dual ball valve fixture can completely isolate the system. The system uses relatively high water temperatures, commonly around 180 degrees, Fahrenheit. In North America, the most common heating output is 112F, the difference between the panel and the room temperature.

Key Takeaways:

  • Modern panel radiators are an effective source of heat, and they are also easy to install.
  • The units offer another plus. These radiators emit radiant as well as convective heat.
  • These units come standard with a high-quality powder coat finish. They are classic in look and appeal, making them ideal for a retrofit.

“As is the case with many heat emitters in North America, the published data for heat output from panel radiators is based on relatively high water temperatures.”

Pay increases are an important decision employers need to carefully consider. They are critical for employee engagement and satisfaction, but also impact the long-term success of the company. However, determining who should get a raise and the timing of the raise is not a simple step. Maintaining fairness is a must and decision makers should analyze several factors. Setting performance priorities and goals can establish the baseline for employee evaluation. Level at which an employee contributes is also a factor that influences the increase of base salary.

Key Takeaways:

  • One expert says they issue raises when an employee exceeds performance goals that are agreed upon ahead of time.
  • Another says they award raises based on length of time with the company.
  • Innovation, intrinsic value, and degree of responsibility are other factors used to determine raises.

“Consider consistency — not just in performance, but also in attendance, character and how they work with everyone.”
